What is a fictitious business name?

A fictitious business name is a name owners give their businesses. Usually the name describes the type of business and is different from the name of the owner, partnership or corporation. A fictitious business name is often referred to a "DBA," meaning "doing business as."

Practically anybody who wants to open and conduct a business in the state of California. The state of California Business and Profession Code (Chap. 5, section 17900) requires any individual, partnership or other associations or corporations who regularly transact business for profit in this state under a fictitious business name.

    All forms are in the Adobe Acrobat "PDF" format. To view, fill in and print forms, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or higher installed on your computer. To install, click here to download. The Reader does not allow for the forms or the information entered into the forms to be saved. To save the form and the data on your computer, you must have Acrobat 4.0 or higher installed. Acrobat can be ordered through Adobe at www.adobe.com.

     
    Find a Form
  • Click on either the Judicial Council, County, Bankruptcy, or Legal Ads tab.

  • If you know the Form Number or Form Name, enter the information in the fields indicated and click "Find", or

  • To browse, select a category or a location (dependent on form type) from the drop down Index.

  • Once you've found the form you want, click on the form's name and the form will open within Acrobat Reader.

     
    Fill Out a Form
  • You may find it easier to complete a form by maximizing it's appearance on your screen. Make sure your browser window is open fully and use the Magnify/Demagnify button (represented by a magnifying glass) on the Acrobat Reader toolbar to resize the form. Magnify the form by selecting the magnifying glass icon and clicking on the area of the form to be magnified, decrease magnification by holding the "Ctrl" button while in magnify mode.

  • To fill-in a form field, make sure the Hand button on the toolbar is selected. Move the hand near the field to be filled in and click your mouse on the field when the hand changes to a text entry cursor. The field can now be filled in. To mark check boxes, simply click within the check box to insert a check. (NOTE: You are limited in the number of lines you can type in one field. If you type more than the form can accept, it will simply display the last lines of typed text and may not display properly when printed. In some cases however, when typing on a form that is not magnified, it will appear that the last line disappears. Simply TAB to the next field and the last line will correctly display.)

  • To navigate through the form
    To move to the next field, select TAB
    To move to the previous field, select Shift+TAB
    To move to the next line in a multi-line field, select ENTER

     
    Print Form
  • Either click on the printer icon on the toolbar or select File - Print from top bar, to print to a printer connected to your computer.

  • Close the Window (File - Close) to return to Daily Journal Online.
